Karen Smith in Conversation With Yang Shu

Yang Shu has made a significant contribution to the language of abstract painting in China in his especial way. After the graduation from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1980s, Yang Shu keeps expressing his emotions, intense and vague, vibrant and destructive, arbitrarily onto the canvas. The current exhibition at OCAT Xi’an shows the artist’s representative paintings. On October 25, he will talk with OCAT Xi’an director Karen Smith about his art practice.

Yang Shu was born in 1965 in Chongqing. He graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1988, and now he teaches in this university where he received his Master’s degree. In 1995, he joined the one-year residency programme at Amsterdam Rijksakdemie. He works and lives in Chengdu now.
